The IBGE has published state and municipal population estimates since 1975. From 1992 on, it started publishing them in the Official Gazette, in compliance with Art. 102 of Law No. 8,443, of July sixteen, 1992, for the purposes provided for in Item VI of Art. 1st of the aforementioned law. In 2013, Complementary Law No. 143, of July 17, 2013 was published, establishing that the competent entity of the federal executive power should publish in the Official Gazette, up to August 31st of each year, the list of Municipal Populations, and upt to December 31st, the list of State and Federal District Populations. Municipal Populations, one should note, are the most important data used by the cabe destacar, são o insumo mais importante utilizado pelo Brazilian Court of Audit - TCU for the distribution of the State and Federal District Revenue Sharing Fund - FPE and of the Municipal Revenue Sharing Fund - FPM.
In Census years, the IBGE publishes data on the enumerated population. For 2023, in compliance with Art. 102 of Law No. 8,443, of July 16,1992, the populations of the 2022 Population Census were published in the Official Gazette, on August 31, 2023, with updates of territorial borders that were reported to the IBGE between August 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023, within the scope of technical cooperation agreements with state bodies, aimed at consolidating the borders.
