The Monthly Survey of Trade produces indicators that allows the monitoring of the short-term behavior of the retail trade in the country, investigating the gross revenue of resale formally constituted, with 20 or more employed persons and whose main activity is the retail trade. The survey started in January 1995, just in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro, producing indicators of real and nominal revenue, employed persons and salaries and other compensation.
From 1997 on, the survey expanded to the Metropolitan Areas of Recife and Salvador. In the year 2000, the survey gained a national coverage, producing indicators of volume and of the nominal revenue disaggregated in five activity groups, for Brazil and the states of Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás and the Federal District. For the other Federation Units, the indicators of the retail trade are disclosed without disaggregation.
As of January 2004, the time series of the survey was implemented, taking the base of 2003=100. The segment “Other articles of personal and household use” was disaggregated to give origin to the segments of “Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries”, “Office, computer and communication material and equipment”, “Books, papers, magazine and stationary” and “Other articles of personal and household use”. The series 2003=100 extends the coverage of the indicators, including construction material and gives birth to the series of indexes of the Extended Retail Trade, which aggregates the activities of “Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces” and “Construction material” to the retail indexes.
From 2005 on, the estimation of the nominal revenue and of the volume of sales (seasonally-adjusted) was implemented.
In 2012, from January on, the new series of the survey, with base 2011=100 started.
From January 2017 on, a new series began, taking as base the year 2014.
