The Annual Survey of Trade – PAC investigates information on the basic structural characteristics of the business segment of the trading activity in the Country, having as its investigation unit formally established business enterprises, that is, those  registered in the National Register of Legal Entities – CNPJ, of the Federal Revenue Secretariat, whose main source of revenue is trade.

The series of the Annual Survey of Trade – PAC began in 1988 and provided, until 1995, results in inter-census years, except for 1991. In  1996, with the Economic Statistics Modernization Program, the survey was completely redesigned and adapted to the parameters of the new production model of industrial, trade and service statistics. In this model, the five-year economic censuses were replaced by annual sample-based surveys, which   adopted the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE and whose basic selection register   is obtained from the Central Register of Enterprises – CEMPRE, which is continuously updated. Since the reference year 2008,  including 2007 results, the IBGE started to release a new series of PAC data, using CNAE 2.0, which substituted the CNAR 1.0, previously used. Nowadays, the survey investigates enterprises that are classified under  the section G of CNAE 2.0, which includes Trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; Wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles; and Retail trade.

The survey holds the collection of several economic and financial information: gross and net revenue; trade margin; number of enterprises and local facilities; expenses with personnel; financial expenditures, operational or non-operational; acquisition and inventory of goods for resale; and acquisitions and write-offs of fixed asset, among other aspects.

It is an annual survey, and its geographic coverage is national, with results released for Brazil, Major Regions and Federation Units.
