PIA - Enterprise investigates the basic structural characteristics of the Brazilian industrial sector. The surveyed unit is the formally established industrial enterprise – that is, one that is registered in the National Registry of Legal Entities (CNPJ) of the Department of Federal Revenue – and with industrial activity as their main source of revenue. Considering the enterprises with multiple addresses and/or multiple economic activities, information about the enterprise and its other local branches is added, for example physical area, usually, a continuous one, in which one or more economic activities are developed, corresponding to a business address or a CNPJ code.
The Annual Survey of Industry - PIA series started in 1966 and, until 1995, it released results in inter-census years, except for 1971 and 1991. As of 1996, with the Economic Statistics Modernization Program, the survey was entirely reformulated and adjusted to the parameters of the new production model of industrial, commercial and service statistics, being then split into two surveys: Annual Survey of Industry - Enterprise (PIA - Enterprise) and Annual Survey of Industry (PIA Product). The PIA - Enterprise series started in 1996, and the PIA – Product series, in 1998. In this model, quinquennial economic censuses were replaced by a sample-based annual survey, which adopted the National Classification of Economic Activities - CNAE whose basic registry comes from the regularly updated Central Register of Enterprises - CEMPRE. From 2008 on, presenting retroactive results to 2007, the IBGE started to release a new data series for PIA - Enterprise, using the CNAE 2.0 to replace the previously used, CNAE 1.0. At present, the survey investigates enterprises classified in the B and C sections of CNAE 2.0, which cover mining and quarrying industry and manufacturing industry, respectively.
The survey gathers many economic-financial information: gross and net revenue; value of the manufacturing industry; number of enterprises and local branches; employed persons; employee expenditure; industrial operating costs and other expenditures; acquisition and retirement of fixed assets, among other aspects of the enterprises with one or more employed persons.
PIA - Enterprise is conducted on an annual basis. It covers the national territory, with results released for Brazil, Major Regions, Federation Units and Municipalities.
