This survey approaches the socioeconomic profile of high-growth enterprises and gazelle enterprises, due to their importance in the generation of salaried jobs in the triennium. The definitions of high-growth and gazelle enterprises adopted by the IBGE are grounded on the following documents: EUROSTAT-OECD manuals on business demography statistics and Measuring entrepreneurship: a collection of indicators, published in 2007 and 2009, respectively: high-growth enterprises have an average increase in salaried employees of at least 20% per year for a period of three years and have 10 or more persons employed in the first year of observation; gazelles are the subset of high-growth enterprises which are up to 5 years old, in the reference year.
The study Statistics of Entrepreneurship started in 2008, based on information from the Central Register of Enterprises - CEMPRE and on structural enterprises surveys in the areas of Industry, Civil Construction, Trade and Services carried out by the Institute, according to the National Classification of Economic Activities - CNAE 2.0. From the beginning until its seventh edition, in 2015, the survey had been carried out with the technical cooperation of Endeavor Brazil, a global non-profit institution which fosters entrepreneurship, with results published in a specific journal. As of 2016 (year of reference), due to the similarity of the databases used by the Demography of Enterprises, to the scope of business entities and to the need to optimize the Institution's resources in view of other thematic analyzes, it was decided to gather both studies in the publication Demography of enterprises and statistics of entrepreneurship.
The study Statistics of Entrepreneurship provides, particularly for high-growth companies, information on number, size, average age, sectors of economic activity, salaried jobs, sex and schooling of employed persons, salaries and other compensation, gross value added, labor productivity, among other characteristics.
The study is carried out annually and its geographical coverage is national, with results reported to Brazil, Major Regions and Federation Units.
